Operation Theatre Live deliver incredible medical workshop

Scott Medical Health Care College recently played host to an extraordinary two-day event in collaboration with Operation Theatre Live, marking a significant milestone in hands-on medical education.

Operation Theatre Live has dedicated 12 years to guiding students toward promising medical careers. With 44 combined years of expertise in teaching anatomy and physiology, and extensive national partnerships with schools, colleges, and UK universities, Operation Theatre Live is renowned for its innovative approach to medical education.

The heart of Operation Theatre Live lies in its day-long immersive experience, which brings the UK's only live surgical operating theatre directly to schools and colleges. Students are invited to work alongside the clinical team, gaining first-hand experience in charting the treatment journey of a patient, from initial incident to trauma surgery.

The event is packed with interactive dissections of real organs, clinical interventions, and surgical procedures, meticulously aligned with GCSE and A-level specifications. This unique experience not only provides invaluable medical preparation for university applications but also awards students a Medical Work Experience Certificate for UCAS and interviews.

As the Operation Theatre Live team arrived at 7 am to set up, anticipation buzzed in the air. Led by main presenter Aaron Buchanan, assisted by Ellis Gibbons as the technical support, and supported by training student Bilinda Grewal, the team was ready to inspire the next generation of medical professionals.

Mrs. Chalmers, a staff member at the college, expressed her pride in the students' maturity and active engagement with the tasks presented to them. Ms. Heseltine, another staff member, enthusiastically participated in the event, even providing a vivid demonstration of the internal processes of the lungs.

Students shared a range of reactions to the immersive experience. Rhianna from Year 10 described it as a "unique, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity," while Marnie, also from Year 10, found it "really good fun" after adjusting to the initial smell.

For Mariana from Year 10, the event was simply "wow, so interesting," while Nichole, also from Year 10, found it "amazing to be so hands-on, to touch and feel everything we were learning."

Although some found aspects of the experience challenging, the overall sentiment was overwhelmingly positive. Emily from Year 11 described it as "a good experience," while Joel from Year 12 emphasised the privilege of both observing and participating.

The collaboration between Scott Medical Health Care College and Operation Theatre Live has provided students with a unique and enriching opportunity to delve into the fascinating world of human anatomy and surgery, inspiring and preparing them for future medical endeavours.
