Students hear about end-of-life care from St Luke's Hospice

Our students recently had the honour of hosting Iain Mitchell, a registered Nurse and member of the St Luke's Hospice Education Team.

Iain, an educator specialising in clinical skills and end-of-life care, shared invaluable insights with our year 9, 10, and year 12 students.

During the morning sessions, Iain eloquently discussed various terms related to end-of-life care, including the concept of palliative care. He provided a brief history of St Luke's Hospice, highlighting the remarkable support they offer to countless individuals each year, along with the associated costs.

One of the most touching aspects of Iain's presentation was his emphasis on the diverse team of professionals working at St Luke's. He shed light on their crucial roles in delivering personalised, person-centred care to those in need, whether at home or within the hospice.

The engagement from our students was remarkable, particularly from the year 9s, who displayed great enthusiasm with their questions. Iain patiently addressed each query, ensuring the students gained a comprehensive understanding of the topic.

Beyond medical care, Iain emphasised the importance of spiritual, emotional, and cultural support in ensuring a peaceful and dignified end of life. He shared touching anecdotes, such as a grandmother's wish to bid farewell to her grandchildren at the beach. Unable to leave the hospice, St Luke's staff transformed the conservatory into a beach setting, allowing her to create lasting memories with her loved ones.

Students like Grace and Julia demonstrated a keen interest in understanding the deeper aspects of end-of-life care. Grace's question about the concept of "spirit" prompted a thoughtful response from Iain, emphasising the individual's personal beliefs. Julia's enquiry regarding children staying with their ill parents highlighted the compassionate approach taken by St Luke's, respecting the wishes of families to provide comfort wherever possible.

Moreover, Iain shared heart-warming stories of celebrations amidst difficult circumstances, including weddings and even a New Year's party for a young lady with her friends, all organised with the loving support of St Luke's staff.

Iain's visit provided our students with an opportunity to delve into a challenging yet crucial topic. Through his insights and willingness to engage with questions, he helped illustrate end-of-life care, emphasising its significance on both a personal and societal level. We are grateful for the enlightening experience and the invaluable lessons learnt from St Luke's Hospice Education Team.
