Natalie Jary Sheds Light on NHS Apprenticeships

In an enlightening session, Natalie Jary, NHS Careers Hub lead, visited Year 11 students to unravel the myriad of apprenticeship opportunities within the National Health Service (NHS).

As the students stand on the cusp of making crucial decisions about their future careers, Natalie's insights provided a valuable perspective on the vast and diverse world of the NHS.

Natalie began her talk by providing the students with a staggering fact: the NHS is not only a vital healthcare provider, but also the fifth-largest employer worldwide. Drawing a compelling comparison, she highlighted the sheer scale of the NHS, dwarfing even global corporations like McDonald's. This revelation served as a testament to the vast array of opportunities available within the NHS, far beyond the stereotypical roles of doctors and nurses.

Continuing her presentation, Natalie delved into the various roles that contribute to the smooth functioning of the NHS. While some positions, like nurses, doctors, paramedics, and dentists, are patient-facing, Natalie emphasised the critical importance of behind-the-scenes roles. From recruitment staff to maintenance workers, cleaners, engineers, and even her own role, each position plays a pivotal part in keeping the NHS operational.

Natalie opened the students' eyes to the staggering diversity of job roles within the NHS, totalling an impressive 350 different positions. This variety ensures that there is a niche for every skill set and interest, allowing individuals to find their unique path within the vast healthcare landscape.

One of the key takeaways from Natalie's talk was the emphasis on apprenticeships as a viable route into a career within the NHS. She explained that students can explore this option either as school-leavers, or by pursuing Degree Apprenticeships. The latter provides a unique opportunity to earn while learning, all without incurring tuition fees, ultimately allowing individuals to become degree-qualified without the financial burden.

Recognising the potential interest amongst students, Natalie announced her commitment to working closely with Mrs. Humpherson to offer assistance to those considering applying for NHS apprenticeships. This support extends from refining CVs to aiding in the application process and providing guidance for interview preparation. Natalie's dedication to fostering the next generation of NHS professionals ensures that interested students have the necessary tools and advice to embark on their apprenticeship journeys.

As students prepare to step into the workforce, they now have a broader understanding of the expansive opportunities within the NHS, with apprenticeships serving as a promising entry point.
