A Taste of Tradition: EAL Students Connect at ‘How Very British!’ Event

Welcoming new students and helping them feel at home is a top priority at Scott College. Recently, our English as an Additional Language (EAL) department hosted a special ‘How Very British!’ event designed to help our new Year 7 EAL students settle into secondary school life.

The event provided a welcoming, relaxed environment where our newest joiners could connect with older EAL students, speaking comfortably in both English and their native home languages. Our senior students were fantastic ambassadors, sharing valuable advice about life at school, offering tips on navigating the day-to-day routine, and providing a friendly face in the corridors.

Reflecting on the afternoon, Sheren shared:

"It was so lovely being able to speak with the younger students in our home languages and help them feel welcome. Moving to a new school can be daunting, but sharing our experiences—and enjoying some traditional scones together—made everyone feel right at home!"

Of course, no proper British gathering is complete without a sweet treat! Students gathered over classic scones served with jam and clotted cream—sparking a lively (and delicious) debate on the "correct" order of toppings. The consensus? Jam first, then cream, of course!

The event was a resounding success, filled with laughter, great conversation, and new friendships. A huge thank you to all the staff and students who made the afternoon so special. Our Year 7s are already looking forward to the next get-together!
