Hands-On Healthcare: Students Inspired by Practical Skills Day

Students at Scott Medical and Healthcare College recently stepped away from traditional classroom learning to immerse themselves in an engaging and highly informative Practical Skills Day.
The event offered a unique opportunity for students to learn directly from leading professionals working across a wide range of healthcare sectors.
Experts in Midwifery, Optometry, Infection Control, and First Aid, alongside dedicated representatives from the Devon Freewheelers, delivered a series of interactive, hands-on workshops throughout the day.
The event was designed to give students a realistic look into the daily lives of healthcare providers. Through various practical demonstrations and interactive challenges, students practised essential first aid techniques, learnt the critical protocols behind infection control, and handled specialist tools used daily in optometry and midwifery.
Year 10 student Ella found the interactive nature of the day incredibly valuable, sharing:
"Getting to try out the equipment myself was amazing. Learning about midwifery and optometry from people who actually do the job every day made me realise just how many different options there are in healthcare. It’s definitely made me think about my future career!"
Representatives from the Devon Freewheelers also shed light on the vital, behind-the-scenes role emergency courier services play in supporting the NHS and saving lives. This hands-on approach successfully brought classroom theory to life, helping students appreciate the vital roles these professionals play in supporting patients and local communities.
"The session with the Devon Freewheelers was incredible," added Harry, also in Year 10. "I didn't realise how much goes into emergency couriering and how vital they are to the NHS. The whole day really brought our classroom learning to life."
The workshops provided an excellent environment for students to ask questions, explore different career pathways, and gain a deeper understanding of the skills required in each profession. The energy and enthusiasm throughout the day left many students feeling inspired and motivated as they consider their own futures in medicine and healthcare.
"We would like to extend a massive thank you to all of our visiting professionals for volunteering their time and sharing their immense expertise," said Miss Reid "Their dedication made the day an incredibly valuable, memorable, and inspiring experience for our students."
