Local MP Luke Pollard Visits Scott College for an Inspiring Student Q&A and School Tour

Scott College was delighted to welcome local Member of Parliament Luke Pollard for a special visit, offering students a unique opportunity to engage directly with politics and public life.
The visit began with a guided tour of the school, led by Headteacher Miss Frier, during which Luke Pollard observed a range of lessons across different subjects. He took a keen interest in teaching and learning at Scott College, speaking with staff and students throughout the morning.
At the end of the tour, students from Year 9 through to Year 13 took part in an open Q&A session. Students were encouraged to ask any questions they wished, leading to a wide-ranging and insightful discussion covering education, careers, life as an MP, voting, and the future of politics.
Luke Pollard also spoke about his role representing Plymouth, highlighting funding secured for the city, improvements to the NHS, and the importance of creating better job opportunities for young people. He shared his passion for Plymouth’s future and the positive developments happening across the city.
Students were praised for their confidence, curiosity, and engagement throughout the session, with many continuing conversations after the formal Q&A had ended due to their enthusiasm.
Students also shared their experiences of life at Scott College. Mia in Year 9 said:
“Because of the extra opportunities—I loved doing the Step into the NHS workshop and creating our own adverts.”
Oscar in Year 11 added:
“The guest speakers that come in give us more information about the different jobs available. It’s great to hear real people and their personal experiences.”
Year 13 student Amelie reflected on her journey, saying:
“Scott College has given me the confidence to express myself and grow from Year 9 to Year 13. I’ve been offered a place in midwifery and have also been successful as a Norland nanny, and I’m now deciding which path to follow.”
Luke Pollard praised the school, its students, and staff, highlighting the positive learning environment and ambition shown across all year groups. He encouraged students to take an interest in politics and voting, and to consider how they can help shape their future.
Miss Chalmers, Health and Social Care Teacher and Futures Coordinator said:
“It was a fantastic opportunity for our students to engage in open discussion with their local MP. They asked thoughtful questions and represented the school brilliantly throughout.”
We would like to thank Luke Pollard for taking the time to visit Scott College and speak with our students. It was an inspiring and valuable experience for all involved.
