Year 9 Students Celebrate National Science Week at City College Plymouth

Year 9 students from across campus had a fantastic day at City College Plymouth celebrating National Science Week with a range of exciting, hands-on science activities.
During the Sports Therapy and Injury session, students learnt how to apply physio tape, practised sports therapy massage techniques, tried a shockwave therapy machine, and tested their jumping power on a force deck. Aidan achieved the highest jump of the day with an impressive 30.7 cm, earning the title Jumper of the Day, while Charlie was named Coach of the Day for expertly running the force deck.
In the Science for All session, students used micro-pipettes to separate DNA and even create pictures. Ava showed incredible perseverance and precision, producing a detailed bee picture using the micropipette.
The day continued with a Healthcare Science session, where students explored the bones of the human body and carefully drew the different bones in the leg. In Forensic Science, they learned how to take fingerprints and used fingerprint dusting techniques to identify the culprit who had stolen a drink bottle.
All of these engaging activities were led by the brilliant science team at City College Plymouth, who provided students with an inspiring insight into the many possibilities within science. The group was also treated to a delicious lunch and looked after throughout the day by the college’s welcoming marketing team.
Our students thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Olivia shared:
“I liked that we got to use the pro equipment! We didn’t just learn, we did!”
Jack added,
“It was really cool to see the forensic science fingerprinting done practically – I really enjoyed taking my own fingerprint.”
We would like to say a huge thank you to City College Plymouth for such an inspiring and memorable day. Our students gained valuable hands-on experience and left feeling excited about the world of science.
We hope to return next year with even more students!
