Students Explore the World of Health and Social Care at the University of Plymouth

Our Year 10 students had an incredible opportunity to explore the world of Health and Social Care at the University of Plymouth’s inspiring showcase event! From hands-on activities to eye-opening talks, they discovered the amazing variety of careers within the sector and learned about the many exciting pathways leading to university-level study. It was a day full of inspiration, curiosity, and future possibilities!
Throughout the day, students connected with course leaders and ambassadors who shared their insights into studying Medicine, Dentistry, Nursing, Midwifery, Radiography, Physiotherapy, and more. They got hands-on with exciting activities, from viewing cancer cells under a microscope and analysing muscle movement to identifying X-rays and practising lifesaving techniques. Highlights included a live dentistry demo, exploring the eye through retinoscopy, and stepping inside a thought-provoking doll’s house installation revealing the hidden truths of health and wellbeing.
“I am really interested in going into Radiography, so having the chance to use a Doppler to see all the muscles and tendons in my arm was incredible! The lecturer explained the different parts of the wrist and what radiographers look for, and it really opened my eyes to how fascinating radiography is. It’s definitely made me want to pursue this career even more.” - Johan, Year 10
“Getting the chance to deliver a baby on a training dummy was such an amazing experience! It felt so real, and it’s made me even more excited about becoming a midwife one day. I can really see myself doing this as a career now.” - Isla, Year 10
The showcase provided an excellent insight into both the practical and academic sides of health and social care, inspiring many of our students to consider future careers in these vital fields.
