Intercom Trust Visit: Pride, Protest, and Progress

Students from The Power of Us group at Scott Medical and Healthcare College and the Sprinklz group from Stoke Damerel Community College came together for an inspiring and educational session with guest speaker Hollie Wright from the Intercom Trust. Hollie, a Devon Schools and Young People Project Worker (she/her), visited to talk about the history and importance of Pride, protest, and the ongoing journey toward inclusion and equality.
She shared powerful insights into why Pride is more than just a celebration—it’s also about recognising progress and honouring the courage of those who stood up for LGBTQ+ rights. Sid reflected, “It’s so important to see how far we’ve come in human rights and inclusion. I’m proud to be me.”
The session explored different forms of protest—such as sit-ins, marches, rallies, and written campaigns—and how these actions have been essential in securing rights and visibility for the LGBTQ+ community.
A key moment discussed was the Stonewall uprising in June 1969, when a small LGBTQ+ bar in New York City was raided by police under discriminatory laws. At the time, an 'Anti-Masquerading Ordinance' made it illegal to wear clothing that did not match one's assigned gender. Patrons were ordered outside for identification and threatened with arrest—something that happened regularly. But this time, they resisted. The community fought back, sparking a five-day protest that became a turning point in the LGBTQ+ rights movement.
Hollie also spoke about the right to peaceful protest in the UK. Under Article 11 of the European Convention on Human Rights, everyone has the legal right to assemble and express their views—something that continues to support and empower positive change today.
Mrs Chalmers and Miss Moss would like to extend their sincere thanks to Hollie for visiting and sharing such an important message. Miss Moss added, “Our Stoke Damerel students really valued the opportunity to join Scott College for a session that resonated with them all.”
