Inspiring the Next Generation: Dr Aggie Pettengell Visits Scott College

Scott College students were treated to an extraordinary talk when Dr Aggie Pettengell, Emergency Medicine and Major Trauma Consultant at Derriford Hospital, visited to share her career journey, professional insights, and life lessons.
Giving up two hours of her time, Dr Pettengell wowed students with her down-to-earth professionalism, warmth, and candour. Overseeing complex trauma care across Devon, Cornwall, and Somerset, her daily work ranges from high-stakes surgical interventions to treating unexpected DIY mishaps.
"She was so funny and down to earth, and what an amazing job she does!" - Jack, Year 11
Overcoming Setbacks & Unconventional Paths
Dr Pettengell’s story served as a powerful reminder that success is rarely a straight line:
-
Persistence over perfection: After failing her 11+ exam, she attended a comprehensive school, working hard to qualify for A-levels before advancing to medical school.
-
Unconventional choices: Alongside Science and Maths, she studied History and Drama at A-level—explaining how Drama built her composure, team leadership, and communication skills under pressure.
-
Hands-on learning: As a practical learner, she encouraged students to find what excites them, sharing her own passion for "putting people back together."
"It made me think so much about my career and future—I went home and booked two university visits!" - Charlie, Year 12
Reflecting on her career, Dr Pettengell shared that medicine is far more than a job: "The love of making people better, or supporting them in end-of-life care—giving people hope and reassurance on the worst days of their life—is a gift and a privilege."
"It was so interactive and lovely to be told the truth about careers... even learning that studying medicine can open up paths like being a cruise ship doctor!"
— Ella, Year 10
Hands-On Skills & Top Advice for Students
Alongside the talk, students took part in interactive CPR teamwork and trauma demonstrations. Mrs Chalmers expressed how proud she was of the insightful questions students asked throughout the session.
