Designed to push our students out of their comfort zones, the day blended high-intensity medical science, creative engineering under pressure, and classic team-building sports. From start to finish, the maturity, focus, and sheer determination on display from our Year 9s was nothing short of outstanding.

Part 1: The Surgical Suite (Suturing Challenges)

The day kicked off with students scrubbing in at our temporary surgical station. Tasked with learning the delicate art of suturing (stitching wounds), students used bananas and oranges as stand-ins for human skin.

With surgical tools in hand, the room fell into a hushed, incredibly focused silence. Students carefully practiced navigating tension, needle angles, and knot-tying to cleanly close incisions on their fruit "patients."

The Next-Level Challenge: For those who mastered the basic suture quickly, a major obstetric challenge awaited. Students were tasked with carefully performing a "Caesarean section"—delicately incising an orange, successfully removing a specific segment (the "baby") without damaging the surrounding fruit, and then meticulously suturing the outer peel back together.

The precision, steady hands, and calm focus demonstrated during this high-pressure simulation were truly university-grade!

Part 2: The Emergency Room (Biomedical Recycling Splinting Challenge)

Having mastered the operating table, students were immediately thrown into a fast-paced emergency room scenario. Working in teams of seven, they had to navigate a biomedical recycling and engineering crisis.

Each team was assigned two "casualties": one with a severe leg injury and one with an arm injury. The mission? Design and build custom splints to completely immobilise the limbs using only recycled materials, including:

• Corrugated cardboard boxes

• Cardboard egg cartons (perfect for joint contouring!)

• Elastic bands

• Masking tape

Teams spent their first ten minutes in a huddle, mapping out their blueprints and discussing structural integrity. They then made a prototype before making the real item. 

Once construction began, the classroom transformed into a buzzing workshop. The injured "casualties" then had to put the splints to the test, moving around to evaluate just how secure and effective the structures were. To stretch their skills even further, advanced teams engineered custom cardboard neck braces to secure their casualties' cervical spines.

Part 3: House Pride on the Field

After a morning of intense medical focus and hands-on science, it was time to burn off some energy on the school fields.

The afternoon saw the Year 9 houses go head-to-head in a fiercely competitive House Rounders Tournament, featuring some massive hits and brilliant tactical catches to catch people out. This was followed by a fun Relay Race that had everyone on their feet cheering.

To wrap up an incredible, exhausting, and inspiring day, students cooled down and celebrated their hard work with a well-earned, much-needed cold ice lolly in the sunshine.

Our Year 9s proved today that they are creative problem solvers, resilient teammates, and perhaps even the future surgeons and engineers of tomorrow. A massive thank you to all the staff who made this day possible, and well done to Year 9 for being absolutely outstanding!
