From Scott College to the Royal Navy: A Year 11 Success Story

After a year of applications and preparation, Max began an exciting new chapter in the Royal Navy, and he was eager to share his experiences with us.

"After completing my GCSEs in July, I began the Royal Navy’s basic training programme in September, following a year-long application process. The 10-week course was entirely on base, with no leave, and included a wide range of challenging activities—from firing SA80s to completing a two-day, 32km hike across Dartmoor.

The Dartmoor exercise was the toughest challenge for me. Carrying a heavy burgen on very little sleep pushed me to my limits, but completing it was incredibly rewarding. Over the 10 weeks, I also honed personal organisation skills through kit inspections, shoe polishing, ironing, A4 folding, and weekly formal inspections.

Week 10 was particularly memorable, culminating in a parade after weeks of drill practice. The cap toss at the end was a proud moment I will never forget.

I’m now studying basic Weapons Engineering theory at HMS Collingwood until September 2026 before moving to Scotland for Submarine training. Being on the Fast-Track programme, made possible by my strong GCSE results, gives me the opportunity for quicker promotion within the Royal Navy. I owe a lot to Scott College for helping me achieve this. The support from my teachers, guidance during my studies, and encouragement to aim high gave me the foundation I needed to excel and prepare for life beyond school. Their advice and belief in my potential played a key role in helping me secure this pathway, and I’m grateful for the confidence and skills they instilled in me.

Joining the forces at 16 was a big decision, but one I don’t regret. The training has given me independence, lifelong friendships, unforgettable memories, and skills I’ll carry forward throughout my career."
