Alumni Spotlight: Matei – University College London (UCL)
“Challenging but enjoyable!” That’s how Matei, one of our proud alumni, describes his experience studying Medicine at University College London (UCL). Now in his third year, Matei’s passion for the medical world continues to grow as he navigates one of the most demanding yet rewarding degrees.
“I have a genuine interest and passion for medicine, so although it can be hard, I’m really loving learning,” he says. “The opportunities are incredible! I’ve been taught by some of the leading figures in the field, and I’ve gained so much knowledge from them — not only academically, but also in helping me make decisions about my future specialisms.”
Through these experiences, Matei discovered a particular fascination with the brain and neurology. After speaking with several neurosurgeons, he decided to take an elective module focusing on neurology, extending his course from five to six years. “The brain and the mind are truly fascinating,” he shares. “I’m excited to study them in greater depth and explore both neurology and psychology through upcoming work placements.”
One of the highlights of Matei’s studies so far has been the hands-on experience in anatomy. “UCL is the only university in the UK where students work on whole-body dissections rather than prepared parts. It’s such a unique and valuable way to learn — being able to study up close and see how everything connects.”
Outside of the classroom, Matei has embraced university life in London. “It’s incredibly diverse! I’ve made so many friends, including foreign exchange students, which means I now have friends to visit all over the world. I’ve also joined several societies, including the Physiology Society and the Chess Society, which makes student life even more exciting.”
Matei also credits Scott College for helping him reach this point. “Scott really supported me in making my dream of studying medicine come true. They helped me prepare for the admissions exams — which are extremely challenging — and the teachers and classmates were always there for support. I truly believe that without Scott’s help, it would have been much harder to get where I am today.”
Reflecting on his journey, Matei adds:
“I’m doing things I never dreamed I would do, and I’m living my best life. Studying medicine is tough, but it’s absolutely worth it — and I’m so grateful for the support that helped me get here.”
