Celebrating Black History Month: House Challenge 2025

To mark Black History Month 2025, students at SMHC took part in an exciting House Challenge themed “Standing Firm in Power and Pride.” Students expressed their creativity through artwork, poetry, raps, and extended writing, reflecting on the achievements, resilience, and legacy of Black trailblazers.
All submissions are proudly displayed in the Scott Suite, showcasing the incredible talent and thoughtfulness of our students. Congratulations to Isabella in Year 10, whose carefully considered tribal design was crowned the overall winner, earning 20 House Points for her House!
Our Poet Laureate, Sophie, captivated the school community with an inspiring and thought-provoking poem, while tutor group 9.1 wrote and performed a lively rap in class, bringing rhythm and energy to the celebration.
Sophie’s Poem: No Title
Through trials faced
Their spirits soared
Legacy of dreams restored
Harriet, Rosa, Martin’s fight
Their courage shines, a guiding light
Let’s celebrate
With hearts so free
Their strength, their love
A tale so bright
Black History’s joy
Our shared delight.
This House Challenge offered a wonderful opportunity for students to reflect on the courage and achievements of Black trailblazers, celebrating their power, pride, and enduring legacy—while also enjoying a little friendly House competition!
