The event was structured into four interactive sessions, each running for the length of a lesson, ensuring students had plenty of hands-on experience and insight into real-world healthcare practices.

The day began with a session on infection prevention and control, where students explored sterilisation techniques and germ transmission. They even swabbed areas of the school to test for microorganisms — with impressive results that matched hospital standards.

In the midwifery workshop, students learnt how to monitor patients during pregnancy, while a sensory workshop gave them a deeper understanding of living with sensory impairments and the challenges people face daily. They also learnt how to deliver a baby in different situations and what things can help during the birthing process.

The optometry session introduced students to the diverse career pathways within eye care, covering the science behind eye examinations, the use of specialist equipment, and the importance of maintaining eye health. The students were able to test out wearing different glasses that reflected different eye conditions such as glaucoma. Dylan said, "I can't believe what it's like to be blind. I could take the glasses off, but people live their lives like this."

The nursing session concluded the day with an in-depth exploration of human anatomy and an introduction to essential nursing skills, such as patient assessment and monitoring. Students also practised life-saving CPR techniques on mannequins, reinforcing the importance of emergency response. Additionally, they learnt how to respond to choking incidents by practising abdominal thrusts on mannequins, helping them understand the proper steps to take in such situations.

Practical Skills Day offered students a unique glimpse into future careers and enhanced their classroom learning through real-world, interactive experiences.
