Scott College Awards Ceremony: A Night of Pride and Inspiration

Scott College’s annual Awards Ceremony was a night of pride, celebration, and heartfelt stories, honouring the outstanding achievements of students who have shown dedication to their studies and personal growth.

This year’s theme, “Own Your Story”, placed students at the heart of the evening, giving them the stage to share their remarkable journeys of resilience, courage, and ambition.

Year 12 student Prisca opened the evening by sharing her inspiring Sixth Form journey. “Since starting sixth form, I’ve pushed myself to do things outside my comfort zone — from volunteering with younger students and becoming a peer listener to applying for Gold DofE (even though it was tough, I’m so proud to be close to finishing all three levels!).

For work experience, I’m shadowing biomedical scientists at Plymouth University and an optometrist at New Medica — giving me a real insight into the medical field as I work towards my dream of becoming a neurosurgeon.

Scott College has given me countless opportunities that have built my skills, confidence, and determination — and I’m excited for what comes next.”

Year 11 student Aobo shared his moving story of overcoming loss and bullying. “When I was young, I lost my mother and uncle, and was often bullied at school for being ‘different’. Despite the pain, I chose not to let it hold me back. Joining Scott College changed my life — I felt accepted and valued, even voted ‘Most Likely to Be President’ by my peers!

At Scott, I also joined the NHS Cadets, where I gained medical skills like CPR and teamwork, working alongside other students and medical mentors. This inspired my dream of becoming a doctor.

After college, I plan to join the army as a Royal Medical Officer — a path that will be tough but rewarding. I’m determined to work hard, help others, and make a difference.”

Year 10 student Laycee-Leigh sharing her inspiring weightlifting journey. started “I discovered my love for weightlifting at age 10, training with my nan at the gym. During lockdown, my grandparents turned their home into a gym so I could keep practising.

In 2023, I qualified for the English Championships at my first competition, hosted by Olympian Emily Musket — who later became my coach. Despite losing my original coach just weeks before, I came second at my first national event.

This year, I won gold at the English Age Groups with a personal best lift and have been featured by Plymouth Live and BBC Spotlight. I’m now training for the British Age Groups in September, aiming to become Britain’s strongest under-15.”

Year 12 student Harlie spoke about the courage it took to leave Plymouth High School for Girls after five years and start afresh at Scott College for sixth form. “After five years at Plymouth High School for Girls, I decided to take a risk and move to Scott College for sixth form — even though it meant leaving friends and familiar teachers behind.

At first, it was challenging to settle in, take new subjects like Statistics and Psychology, and adjust to a new environment. I almost went back, but I stayed — and ended up becoming a House Captain, something I’d never imagined doing before.

Now, ten months later, I couldn’t be happier here. Scott College has given me a supportive community, opportunities to grow my confidence, and great preparation for a medical career.

To anyone feeling anxious about new challenges: take the risk and step out of your comfort zone — you’ll surprise yourself. And remember, every step forward, big or small, is worth celebrating.”

The night was made even more special by Scott College’s talented Poet Laureate, Isobelle, who delivered an original poem that perfectly captured the spirit of the evening and left the audience deeply moved.

Family, friends, and staff ‘whooped’ and cheered for the students as they shared their journeys and accepted their awards. The ceremony was a testament to the dedication of Scott College’s staff, whose support empowers students to believe in themselves and achieve their goals.

It was an evening that will be remembered for years to come — a powerful reminder that with resilience, courage, and support, every student can own their story and shape a future they are proud of.
